Historic Property on Tenby's High Street
Principality Commercial have provided a new facility of £700,000 to Alcann Limited to assist with the long-term investment and purchase of a historic property in the centre of Tenby. The property is currently home to Boots Pharmacy who have been at the heart of Tenby High Street for nearly 100 years.
The property is Grade II listed, and steeped in history and legend. It features a door in the basement that leads to a stoned walled medieval tunnel, believed to date back to the 15th century and crosses underneath the High Street before ending in a single room which it is believed is located beneath the graveyard of the St Mary’s Church.
The room at the end of the tunnel houses nothing except a fireplace and chimney breast. Many historians believe that on June 2nd, 1471, a fourteen-year-old Henry Tudor went into hiding in the Cellar of Thomas White’s house which is believed to have stood in the grounds of St Mary’s Church at the time, before fleeing to Brittany on a boat from Tenby Harbour. There is a blue plaque on the external wall of the property which confirms that the room at the end of the tunnel is believed to be the former cellar of Thomas White’s house.
“Here at Principality Commercial, we were delighted to be able to assist a new borrower with the purchase of what is a good local property for the Society in a thriving costal town."
